What Role Does Water glass Play In The Water glass Casting Process?

2025-03-31

We already know that water glass casting is a sand casting process that uses a mixture of water glass and sand as a molding material. This process is usually used to produce ferrous and non-ferrous metal castings. So what role does water glass play in the casting process?

In the water glass casting process, water glass participates in the sand mixing process. The general raw material for casting is sand, but the sand is loose and dispersed and cannot form a certain shape. If you want to form a casting mold, you need a binder to bond the sand together. At this time, water glass plays this role.

Water glass is a general term for various polysilicate aqueous solutions, including sodium water glass, potassium water glass, etc. Sodium water glass is a commonly used material in water glass casting. Sodium silicate dissolves in water and becomes a viscous liquid, which is what we often call sodium water glass.

But you should know that the sand in the casting can usually be recycled and reused after the sand falls off, but water glass is a disposable consumable and cannot be reused later.
